Özet
Septic arthritis is frequently encountered in neonatal calves, and it causes significant economic losses as a result of high mortality rates. The main objective of this study was to identify the etiology of septic arthritis by determinnig the antibiotic susceptibility of the isolated species and to isolate and molecularly identify the bacterial agents that cause arthritis in calves, and to contribute to the selection of appropriate antibiotics in the treatment of the disease caused by these agents. This study bacteriologically examined synovial fluid samples taken from 65 calves 0–3 months old that were brought to the animal hospital clinics of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine of Kafkas University between 2018 and 2020. Conventional techniques were applied to isolate and identify the agents. While the agent was isolated from 5 samples, it could not be isolated from 60 samples. Erysipelothrix spp., Staphylococcus aureus, and Mycoplasma bovis were each isolated in a single sample, Corynebacterium pyogenes was isolated in two samples, and C. pyogenes and Escherichia coli were detected together in one sample. Results of direct PCR from the synovial fluid samples found C. pyogenes DNA in 18 samples, S. aureus DNA in 8 samples, and C. pyogenes and S. aureus DNA together in 3 samples. The results of the antibiogram test found that E. coli was resistant to amoxicillin-clavulanic acid, gentamicin, ampicillin-sulbactam, ciprofloxacin, and trimethoprim sulfamethoxazole; S. aureus was resistant to penicillin G, oxytetracycline, erythromycin, cloxacillin, chlorampheniol, neomycin, and lincomycin; and C. pyogenes was resistant to neomycin, gentamicin, erythromycin, oxytetracycline, and chloramphenicol. The isolates were sensitive to streptomycin, ofloxacin, danofloxacin, ampicillin, cefoperazone, and vancomycin. Erisipelothrix spp. were sensitive to erythromycin, ciprofloxacin, ampicillin, oxytetracycline, ampicillin-sulbactam, and chloramphenicol antibiotics, and resistant to vancomycin, trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole, penicillin G, amoxicillin-clavulanic acid, gentamicin, neomycin, and lincomycin.
