Özet
Newborn calves are exposed to oxidative stress just after birth and yet role of colostrum is not well detailed. This study was aimed to first measure OS parameters [total antioxidant status (TAS), total oxidant status (TOS), oxidative stress index (OS) and IgG concentration in healthy mother and their calves in colostrum and serum by sampling 21 Swiss Brown cattle at birth (blood and colostrum) and their calves and second to determine the changes in the same parameters and IgG levels in healthy calves in the first 45 days of life before and after colostrum intake by blood sampling 23 healthy calves before (day 0= at birth) and after (days 1, 3, 7, 14, 28 and 45) colostrum intake. TAS and TOS levels were determined calorimetrically and IgG level by commercial ELISA kit. A negative correlation was determined between colostral IgG and maternal serum TOS (r:-0.49, P< 0.05) and colostral TAS (r:-0.54, P< 0.05). In the second experiment, although TOS (8.29±0.30) and OSi (1.20±0.08) levels were high at birth, it decreased (P< 0.001) after the 24th hour (6.72±0.2 and 1.05±0.05, respectively) and remained stable (5.77 to 6.21 and 0.88 to 1.1, respectively) during the study period. Similarly, TAS level was high at birth (0.71±0.02) in calves but it decreased (0.61 to 0.68) in the next period. Results may suggest that newborns experience OS after birth and colostrum may be an important source of antioxidants against OS.
