| This study examines the firm’s behavior regarding real earnings management and the role of capital structure and firm performance in this behavior. Real earnings management is a form of financial manipulation that is challenging for external stakeholders to detect. Therefore, econometric models were utilized in this study to identify earnings manipulations performed by firms, using variables such as sales, production costs, and operating expenses. Relationships between these manipulations were evaluated, with capital and asset structures considered as proxies for capital structure, and financial performance, growth opportunities and growth potential considered as proxies for firm performance. The study conducted a two-stage analysis using crosssectional regression and panel data analysis, based on firm-year data for manufacturing firms listed on Borsa İstanbul (BIST) between 2005 and 2021. The findings indicate that an increase in a firm’s growth potential and tangibility negatively effects real earnings management, while an increase in the firm’s performance and debt is positively related to real earnings management. Furthermore, the study reveals that financial determinants related to firm performance, capital structure and asset structure have a greater effect on the manipulation of sales and operating expenses compared to production costs. |
