| The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of L-carnitine administration in the prevention of toxic effects of experimental chronic aflatoxicosis. A total of 80 eight-week-old Japanese quails (Coturnix coturnix japonica) were divided into one control and three treatment groups of 20 quails each. Group II was given 200 mg/litre L-carnitine via the drinking water. Group III was given 60 µg/kg aflatoxin (AF) in feed. Group IV was given AF (60 µg/kg feed) and L-carnitine (200 mg/litre via drinking water). The experimental period lasted for 60 days. The control group was fed with unsupplemented basal diet and water. The low dose of AF (60 µg/kg feed) significantly increased the level of total bilirubin (p<0.001) and aspartate aminotransferase (AST) activity (p<0.001) and significantly decreased the levels of glucose (p<0.05), total cholesterol (p<0.05), very low density lipoprotein (VLDL, p<0.001), triglyceride (p<0.001 … |
